every now and then I need to vent.

I've been a fan since 1984.  ever since I got scared by the library ghost....and it took a few years to fully look at it head on transforming....i've been hooked.  since then it's become one of my favorite movies.   I've also been a fan of saturday night live.  following the careers of bill murray, dan aykroyd, jane curtain, john belushi...all giving me great joy over 30 years.

But now, hollywood, and the world is a bitter, hateful place.  Enter  the Ghostbusters reboot.  How did we get to this point?  Where, if you hate the idea, suddenly people (mostly women, but occasionally men) attack you and call you a sexist instantly?    Lets go back to the beginning, shall we?

1984. Dan Aykroyd needs a third ghostbuster.  With the passing of John Belushi, he is now in a quandary.  For some reason he decides on Bill Murray.  however, Murray being Murray, can't just say yes, he needs to negotiate.  for a while he'd been trying to get his pet project, Razors Edge, made.  so he said to dan and sony, you make Razors Edge, I'll do ghostbusters.   So, enter 1984.  Bills Pet Project Razors Edge flopped miserably, yet Ghostbusters was a HUGE hit, and that's all anyone has ever brought up since.  I believe this is where the trouble all started and he's had it in for ghostbusters ever since.   Made even worse by the fact that all the guys had been given part ownership in the franchise for some bizarre reason....meaning that all  of them (Dan, Harold, Bill, Reitman AND Sony) had to agree on a script idea before anything could get done.

That didn't happen till Ghostbusters 2, which bill supposedly did reluctantly and was never really happy with the final result...claiming there where far more effects shots in it and far less character development (something that could be argued).  After Ghostbusters 2 came out, ABC practically killed off Real Ghostbusters by turning it into a kidified version of it's former syndicated self...with less substance and tons more of the annoying slimer. the Elmo of his day.   after that, the ghostbusters property waned till 2009.

Somehow, after 20 years of development hell on ghostbusters 3, a small miracle happened.   ghostbusters the video game happened, and it was glorious.  winston got an expanded role.  all the right nostalgia bits where hit. the universe was expanded, and they got EVERYONE from the movie back who wanted to participate.      Bill Murray waned a little and said he felt like he owed harold and dan one. false hope was restored.

Now, fast forward to 2014.  Harold Ramis Dies.  Sony gets hacked.  leaked ghostbuster 3 developments hit.  the word reboot hits.     Lets explore what a reboot is for an instant.  A reboot basically follows the same plot line as the original.  same characters, same places, same locations.. the story is just shifted slightly so it appears newer, and then if it's ahit, the writers can go in new directions and continue in the same basic universe.  However, when Ghostbusters news hit, that is not what they seemed intent on doing.  In Ghostbusters case, this is NOT a reboot, but a NEW IDEA with the Ghostbusters NAME attached.  Paul  Feig apparently couldn't conceive a story for ghostbusters 3 where ghosts are known to exist and the world is aware of them.   So, his grand idea was a REBOOT.  and not just the normal reboot....this time he is re imagining EVERYTHING.  From equipment, to cars, to location, to uniforms, to character names.  Apparently the only thing that will stay the same is the ghostbusters franchise logo.

Fans where  rightly out raged. However, that wasn't the  kicker.   the kicker, and where all this started getting messy with people who have agenda's to push... is that the main characters would ALL BE FEMALE.   Lets just go over that again.  Peter, Winston, Egon and Ray never existed in this universe.  The very guys that we grew up loving (male and female fans alike) are now gone...kaput, wiped from existence.  instead, they are being replaced by 'four funny women'...most of whom you either seem to have never heard of before, or vigorously dislike due to previous projects.     So.  What happens?  Instead of no longer just everyone agreeing that this movie is a BAD IDEA all around due to the reboot nature, now we have SEXISM thrown into the mix.  yep.  you heard that right.  Apparently if you don't like the idea of an ALL WOMEN cast in a REBOOT, that makes you a sexist instantly.  you also have women, who may or may not be femenists, saying that they where never ghostbuster fans before, but because the cast is all women, that instantly makes it better than the original guy characters, and anyone who says otherwise...well.. you can see where all this is going.

thankfully, these people seem few and far between.  most fans are level headed enough, both male and female, can agree that this move just seems like pandering at best and un creative at worst just to get people talking. and in that aspect it's working. ghostbusters news has always been clickbait friendly.  but now it's just gotten out of control with this added sexism angle.  don't believe me?  Browse some GB related websites and see it pop up everywhere.

Folks, we WANT women ghostbusters.  Kylie Griffin? Awesome.  Agent Oritz from IDW?  Awesome!  The ones who really deserve to  be promoted to be ghostbusters, Janine and Dana?  NO BRAINER!  what we don't want is some idea that's been fast tracked, only after harold ramis's death....by some executive who up until now has never been associated with the ghostbusters franchise...telling us 'this is a good idea, and it's all you're going to get, so deal with it. it's happening'.

if that labels me a sexist...so be it. i'm a ghostbusters fan first... and that will mean I ALWAYS want to see the REAL ghostbusters...Egon Spengler, Raymond Stantz, Peter Venkman and Winston Zedmorre.   I do NOT want to see a movie with Mellisa McCarthy and her pattended fat jokes...

end rant.
